Opel Denies Report that the Next Zafira will be Developed by PSA Peugeot-CitroĂŤn

The more General Motors European division and PSA Peugeot-CitroĂŤn deepen their newly formed strategic partnership, the more rumors come out.

Earlier today, Germany's Spiegel magazine and Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung business daily reported that GM decided to move development of the next Opel Zafira minivan from Germany to France. Opel's response came in quickly via a statement attributed to Opel/Vauxhall CEO Karl-Friedrich Stracke who denied the reports.

"As part of the initial announcement earlier this year, GM/Opel and PSA stated their intent to cooperate in several areas including product development. Whatever the final split will be among the agreed common projects, no jobs will be lost in the engineering center in Ruesselsheim due to the alliance – in fact, the nature of the alliance is that it is a balanced one," Stracke said in the statement.

"Opel is leaving no stone unturned to enhance the efficiency and future viability in order to achieve sustainable profitability as quickly as possible in a difficult market environment," he added.

In a separate report from Reuters, GM and PSA Peugeot-CitroĂŤn are said to have sealed several deals over the past month, including expanding the number of cars they will build on shared platforms.

"Work teams are in place, meeting regularly and hopefully soon we will be able to share the first update on alliance progress," GM stated.

While GM may not be willing to release details, Peugeot Director General Frederic Saint-Geours was more than happy to show his cards during an interview with Italy's Corriere della Sera. Saint Geours said that the two automotive groups will "launch a raft of new models on shared platforms from 2016".

"We will launch a D-segment car, a crossover, a compact minivan, and two models in the B and C segments," he told the Italian daily. "After that, we will launch a shared-platform eco-friendly car."

To explain, by D-segment car, the French executive means something in the likes of the Opel Insignia/Peugeot 508, by compact minivan a vehicle similar to the Citroen Picasso, while a B-segment car translates to an Opel Corsa/Peugeot 208 and C-segment to the Opel Astra/Citroen C4.

Facelifted Citroen C4 hatchback will hit the Chinese car market on May 18

http://www.carnewschina.com/2012/05/11/ ... on-may-18/

The facelifted Citroen C4, called c-Quatre in China, will be launched on the Chinese car market on May 18. The c-Quatre is based on the first-gen Citroen C4 and made in China by the Dongfeng-PSA joint venture. The facelifted C4 sedan was launched in April. Changes are the same on both cars; a new grill with more chrome, new light units and new bumpers.

Very few changes at the back. Slightly different lights, little little bit more chrome. Price will range from about 100.000 yuan to 140.000 yuan. There will be two engines: a 1.6 with 104hp and 142nm and the good old 2.0 with 147hp and 200nm. The c-Quatre is good to go for at least another three years…

Spy Shots: facelift for the Citroen c-Triomphe in China

The Citroen c-Triomphe will get a facelift, the updated car is expected to hit the Chinese market in the second half of this year. The c-Triomphe is a China-only model based on the first generation Citroen C4, made by the Dongfeng-PSA joint venture. It is positioned above the c-Quattre (current Chinese C4) and below the C5.

It will be a large makeover. Nose will be completely new, design-wise in line with the current second generation European Citroen C4. Changes at the back are a bit less certain, but there will be new light units and a new bumper. The interior will be upgraded as well, again in line with the European C4. Big news under the bonnet: the old 2.0 will finally be replaced by the new 1.6 turbo.

The current c-Triomphe, not exactly a pretty car, but it is big and roomy for the money. Price starts at 149.800 yuan and ends at 172.800 yuan. Power comes from a 2.0 with 147hp, this engine will not return in the facelifted c-Triomphe.

http://www.carnewschina.com/2012/05/12/ ... xm-xantia/

China Car History: the very rare ‘made in China’ Citroen XM & Xantia

Hacking into History for yet another almost forgotten chapter in China’s mad automotive past. The Citroen XM and Citroen Xantia were made in China in small numbers in 1996 and 1997. So far so good, except for two very strange things: both cars were called XM and they were not really made in China.

In those days the import tariff on high-end foreign cars was extremely high, up to 80% of a car’s list price. Import tariffs for foreign auto part however were extremely low, only some 25% of a part’s list price. This discrepancy was of course a possibility! Japanese auto makers saw it first in the late 1980′s, then came the Europeans.

This is how it worked: a foreign car company would establish a small joint venture in southern Guangdong Province where economic-law enforcement was virtually non-existent. The joint venture would then set up a factory, import parts from abroad and make cars in China. A fine solution, no high import tariffs and thus a cheaper car to sell.

Sound very legal, and it was, kind of… The ‘parts’ that were imported were in fact basically complete cars, with only things like the wheels, mirrors or windscreen-wipers missing. These would be installed in the ‘factory’, and this was enough for Guangdong authorities to stamp he car ‘Chinese’.

In the late 1990′s the scheme included at least15 foreign automakers. The central government in Beijing got enough of it and killed the whole thing in 1999. The factories were closed and some very high officials from the Guangdong provincial government were dismissed, or worse…

Citroen was in on this scheme and ‘produced’ the XM and Xantia in a joint venture called Fengshen-Citroen. The mandatory factory was set up in the small city of Huizhou in Guangdong Province. Behind Fengshen stood in fact Dongfeng which legally made cheap Citroens for the Chinese market in the Dongfeng-PSA joint venture that exist until today.

Back to Huizhou. Even though law-enforcement was lacks a car maker still needed to get a permit from provincial authorities to make a certain car. Fengshen-Citroen got a permit for the XM but for some unknown reasons didn’t manage to get a permit for the Xantia. No worry: Fengshen-Citroen just called both cars XM, and the authorities were cool with that.

Fengshen-Citroen was too late in the game. After only two years it was all over. How many cars were ‘made’ is unclear. The story continues a few years later in 2002. The factory in Huizhou was gone but Dongfeng and Citroen still liked the idea of making high-end cars in China. The perfectly legal Dongfeng-PSA joint venture therefore formally requested permission from the central Chinese government to make the XM and Xantia in the joint venture’s factory in Wuhan. The request was unsurprisingly denied…

Newly-elected French president picks Citroen DS5 as official car

In a lot of countries a new president generally means a new presidential ride. France is no exception and a report published by Europe 1 indicates that the newly-elected Socialist president François Hollande has picked a Citroen DS5 as his official car.

This marks a break from the armored Renault Vel Satis that was regularly used by Nicolas Sarkozy, the outgoing right-wing president, during the five years that he was in office.

Hollande has reportedly chosen the eco-friendly HYbrid4 variant of the DS5. It mixes a 163 horsepower four-cylinder HDi turbodiesel engine with a 37 horsepower electric motor that is mounted on the rear axle.

The DS5 HYbrid4 carries a base price of €43,000 ($55,000) but the presidential model will cost a little more. A final set of specifications has yet to be released but several sources indicate that it will be fitted with a big sunroof, a feature not available on run-of-the-mill DS5 models.

Hollande’s first outing in the DS5 is scheduled to take place on May 15th, 2012, when he officially takes the reigns of France from Sarkozy.

The president’s choice will give Citroen an absolutely massive amount of publicity. The DS5 will be featured on numerous television stations and pictures of it will illustrate countless articles published all around the world. Analysts from the advertising world estimate that if Citroen wanted to buy that kind of publicity, it would have to shell out a whopping €10 million ($12.9 million).

François Hollande is not the first French president to choose a Citroen as his official car. RenÊ Coty used a Traction 15/6 H Limousine, Charles de Gaulle favored a DS, George Pompidou rode around in a specially-built four-door SM while Jacques Chirac started his 12-year long presidency in a CX and ended it in a C6.

Party Time! Citroen C5 20th Anniversary Edition hits the China car market

Citroen has launched the C5 20th Anniversary Edition on the Chinese car market. The special C5 celebrates the 20th birthday of the Dongfeng-PSA joint venture. Congrats there! The joint venture was established in 1992 and started production of their first car, the ZX-based Fukang, in 1994.

The Citroen C5 is also made at Dongfeng-PSA, the C5 20th Anniversary Edition comes with 20-anniversary badges, special alloys, a special red-black interior and a small wing on the back. Engine is a 2.3 with 171hp and 230nm, mated to a 6-speed tiptronic.

Price for all this pretty: 229.900 yuan, and that is only 3000 yuan more expensive than the tops-spec standard C5. It won’t however become a collectors item, this special edition is unlimited and production will continue until the end of this year.

Facelifted Citroen C4 hits the China car market

The facelifted Citroen C4 hatchback has been launched on the Chinese car market, price starts at 106.800 yuan and ends at 145.800 yuan. The C4, called c-Quatre in China, is based on the first-gen Citroen C4 and made in China by the Dongfeng-PSA joint venture. The facelifted C4 sedan was launched in April. Changes are the same on both cars; a new grill with more chrome, new light units and new bumpers.

The rather old c-Quatre range is still very popular in China. The c-Quatre is after all those years basically fault-free and therefore very reliable. It sure doesn’t handle like a more modern car but almost nobody who buys a c-Quatre cares about that. Engines: 1.6 with 104hp and a 2.0 with 144hp, mated to a 5-speed manual or a 4-speed automatic.

Interior has been updated as well with a new steering wheel, a new center console and higher quality materials.

Citroen DS4 & DS5 will be launched at the Chinese car market on June 28

The Citroen DS4 and DS5 will both hit the China car market on June 28. Price for the DS4 will range from 250.000 to 300.000 yuan, the DS5 from 250.000 to 350.000 yuan. Very expensive indeed, the DS4 and DS5 will be imported until local production at the new Chang’an-PSA joint venture starts. That will however take at least one more year.

Question is whether selling bot cars as imports first is a smart move. Chinese car buyers will consider them very expensive and that image won’t go away easily. Furthermore, who will buy an import for so much money is a cheaper locally made car is on the way? It might work for very respected brands where buyers are willing to pay a premium to get it first, such as Audi and BMW, but for Citroen? Unlikely.

Citroen however does give it a shot, we will see how it ends up… Power! The DS4 gets a 1.6 with 118hp or a 1.6 turbo with 155hp, the DS5 only gets the 1.6 turbo, tuned to 163 hp. No diesels, no hybrids.

New Police Cars from China

Yesterday I went to the ‘China International Exhibition on Police Equipment’ in Beijing, also known as ‘China Police 2012′. There were a lotta guns, armored vehicles and other things to annoy protesters. More on all that later, we start today with the police cars. Not real police cars, yet, but cars that the various auto makers hope to sell to the Chinese police. On the fist pic the new Citroen c-Quatre (C4) sedan.

Citroen Debuts New C-Elysee and C4 L Compact Sedans

Citroen is targeting the world's most populous automotive segment, the compact saloon market with some 20 million registrations in 2011 or close to a third of all worldwide passenger car sales, with not one but two new models, the C-ElysĂŠe and C4 L.

As you may have already guessed by now, the C-ElysĂŠe is the Citroen flavored version of Peugeot's budget compact sedan, the newly announced 301, with the two cars sharing the same body but bespoke fasicas, wheels and tail lamps.

The French brand says the C-ElysĂŠe will be manufactured in Spain and will be sold in Turkey, Spain, Central Europe and Algeria before the end of 2012.

The sedan model rides on a 2.65m long wheelbase and has large boot capacity of 506 litres. Depending on the market, the C-ElysĂŠe will be available with the latest generation VTi 97bhp petrol engine.

Citroen's second compact sedan is the more upscale C4 L, which is based on the firm's C4 hatchback. Interestingly, the C4 L is the first production Citroen to de designed by the brand's Shanghai style center in China.

According to the French automaker, the C4 L will be produced in each of the zones where it will be sold, including Wuhan, China by the end of 2012, and Kaluga, Russia in the first half of 2013.

Citroen claims that the C4 L will offer a "lounge-like rear compartment" with "wraparound seats, backrests inclined to 29° and headrests designed for added comfort". Available features include hands-free access and start, touch-screen GPS, reversing camera, fully heated windscreen and air ionizer

Buyers will have a choice of three gasoline engines, the BMW Group and PSA co-developed THP 150 and 170, and the VTi 135, all of which can be linked to a new automatic or a sequential 6-speed transmission.

Citroen DS4 & DS5 hit the Chinese car market

Oui oui, the Citroen DS4 & DS5 have been launched on the Chinese car market. Both automobiles are imported, local production at the new Chang’an-PSA joint venture won’t start before late next year. Price for the DS4: 242.800 to 272.800 yuan, DS5: 298.800 to 348.800 yuan. All China-bound DSses are powered by only one moteur; the 1.6 turbo that poupes out 160hp and 240nm, mated to a 6-speed tiptronic.

At the launch party yesterday evening Citroen also showed the Numero 9 concept that debuted at the Beijing Auto Show in April. The light wasn’t very good again, we see… The No.9 will eventually become the DS9, une grande Citroen for the French president and the Chinese car market.

The original DS was at the party as well. Driven by a Frenchman, Citroen likely expected a Chinese driver would crash it, and there they are probably right. Not that any Chinese would care, to them the DS is too old and too petit anyway.

2012 Citroen C5 was updated

Imagine

The Citroen C5 will get a mild update for the 2012 generation of the model, along with a small power boost for the 1.6 HDi unit.

According to the French based automaker, the 2012 Citroen C5 is coming with updated elements, including a new shade for the body, named the Guaranja Brown and a fresh set of 17-inch Egee alloy wheels. The exterior modifications stop here but the cabin is getting a new Exclusive level of equipment, which is adding a mix of leather and textile upholstery, along with a new navigation system named the eMyWay, which is also integrating the company’s connectivity system for the Bluetooth, USB and Aux.
The entry-level engine offered on the Citroen C5, the 1.6 liter HDi unit, is now developing a total output of 115 horsepower, from the standard 110 HP, thanks to some software modifications. The price of the base C5 is now 250 euros more expensive on the vehicle’s local auto market, as the carmaker is saying. The Citroen C5 Tourer can also be upgraded with a rear-view video camera linked to the navigation system, which is showing images on the multimedia screen mounted on the dashboard. More details on the “new” Citroen C5 are expected to be announced later on this summer.

Nu prea am vazut poze cu "noul" C5, sau nu-mi dau eu seama de schimbarile de care zic ei.

Citroen to unveil updated C3 Picasso MPV in Paris

Next September’s Paris Motor Show is quickly approaching and automakers from all over the world are starting to talk about what will be displayed on their stands.

One of the cars that will make its international debut on the Citroen stand will be the facelifted C3 Picasso, a small people mover that has been on the market in Europe and in Latin America since the summer of 2008.

Pictures of the updated C3 Picasso are not currently available but it will likely be thoroughly revamped front and back in order to put it more in line with Citroen’s current design language.

Some of the big changes for 2013 will be found under the hood. Citroen will offer the facelifted C3 Picasso with parent company PSA’s new downsized three-cylinder gasoline engine.

Equipped with variable valve timing, the 1.2-liter engine sends 82 horsepower to the front wheels. It is currently found under the hood of the Peugeot 208.

After greeting the public for the first time at the French gathering the updated 2013 Citroen C3 Picasso will go on sale across Europe in January of next year.

The C3 Picasso won’t be the only car to debut on the Citroen stand in Paris. The French automaker is expected to lift the veil off of a redesigned C3 five-door hatchback and a brand new convertible version of the premium DS3 three-door hatch.
